RESIT-Title (Kierann)

Title

Our genre is Comedy/Crime.
I have been looking on google at films that share the same genre as ours to get a clear, relevant Idea on what my group should call our film. As the crime genre is very closely linked or pared with the action genre, they have a violent side to the title or something else action related, such as Kick Ass and Hot fuzz. What I have discovered is that there are two main types of crime films. You have the physical robbery ones which are closely linked with action. These films include stuff such as bank robberies or gang crime. Now the other is non-violent crimes such as fraud or stealing without harm, such as hacking or identity theft. Less violent crimes. Here I will present some examples to back up my point which will directly show me what area I should be looking for, for my film title.

These films have many things in common with each other. That they are not as gritty as the other type. Sometimes they will include the odd action scene, but do not primarily rely on them as a main part of the story. Another thing they have in common is that the titles sound as if they are all predators. “The Wolf of Wall Street” and “Catch me if you can” they both sound very intimidating as well as “How to Steal a Million”. One major difference I have seen which is different to the other type is that they are all primarily about White collar men and women. The men are wearing a suit while the women are wearing fancy dresses. This automatically gives you an idea that protagonists of these films are getting a lot of money from what they are stealing just by looking at the cover.

These films titles tell the audience instantly that they are jam packed with action and violence. “Kick Ass”, “Hot Fuzz”, “30 minutes or less” “22 Jump Street”. These types of titles are only reserved for films with a lot of action. These titles are supposed to entice the audience to watch them. Such as “30 minutes or less”. That could mean anything but because they know that it is an action it teases the audience what could it be about as it could mean many things. A common theme between both types in many of their titles is that they include numbers. In some cases it’s supposed to show off how dangerous there operation be e.g. “How to steal a million”. In mainstream films through the progression of films people want bigger and better than before. So by them including large numbers in the titles it makes the film sounds like a must see. As a whole instead of names of the films, they are usually short and snappy catch phrases and sentences. This is to make the films sound a lot more interesting at first glance.

In conclusion out of the two types I believe that the first one is best, (Less violent ones). This is, because our film is about identity theft not gang crime. Also our main character is white collar so it makes sense to go with a title from that category. Instead of being a name it should be a catch phrase or sentence. This fits in well with our type as well as a good way to incise the audience to watch our film. It will include a big number. This tells the audience that the protagonist or villain is taking a huge risk, something the audience like to see as it makes the film sound bigger and better at first glance. The title we have come up with “1 million less”. The “1 million less” tells the audience that someone has lost 1 million. Which by its self is a lot of money. But to lose that is demoralising.
