RESIT-Sound Ideas (needs work)

Sound Ideas

The reason why I have chosen the song, "Sc-fi", is because I believe it makes great suspense. It also brings out a mysterious vibe. This vibe is what we are trying to already show in our film opening. This will advance it and make it clear what we are trying to show. As it is electronic it links to the theme and what is happening in the scene. In the film opening the main character Hugh is getting hacked by Zoe. The suspense made in this music could help us make the audience curious and worried about what may happen soon. The downside to this music is that it is Sc-fi and sounds as if something supernatural may happen like you might see alien. We do not want this to happen as it might mislead the audience.

Another option is a song called “House” it’s a very up beat song and is electrical. The reason why we are looking more towards the electrical side is because it fits in with the theme of hacking. This song has a nice beat which builds up tension, however it loses the beat too soon and then turns into a chill song which will ruin the mood we are trying to create. This doesn’t contain a mysterious vibe which we wanted to create. This is a problem as it could undermine what we are trying to present.
This one is different from the other songs as it is a rock song. It has a good up beat rhyme its called "Actionable". It creates a dangerous vibe which connotes that someone is doing something either dangerous or illegal. This fits perfectly with our film opening as it. However, the music sounds to positive for the start of the film opening and doesn’t sound mysterious at all and that will mislead what we are trying to show.

RESIT- Mise Consideration

Mise Consideration

Props:
·         Laptop
·         Coffee cup
·         Photos of male character
·         Keyboard
·         Laptop
·         Phone
·         Table
·         Chairs

      Lighting:

The shots of the male character will always be shown in high key natural lighting. This is because we want him to be seen as a good citizen, the protagonist. Just a usual man getting on with his work on a day off. The high key lighting will connote that he is the good guy. However, when the female is in the shots the lighting will be very low key. This is because we want her to be preserved as the villain in the film opening. This will make her look dangerous. The low-key lighting will connote that she is evil and is about to do something unethical and illegal as well as that she is the bad guy, antagonist of the narrative. The low key lighting will add in her not being fully seen. This is good as it adds to the mysterious of what’s happening in the start as at the start the audience will be wondering what she is doing and they don’t know that the hacker is a female which we are trying to do.

Location:
We are thinking about having to locations for the film opening. The justification for this is so that we do not confuse the audience too much and another reason is that we have two characters who are not in the same location. By having two locations, one for each character it makes a divide which we want. It also makes them we preserved as opposites, which we want. This will aid with the other opposites we have added e.g. good and band, low key and high key lighting, male and female. The research I have conducted to make sure that we are not reinventing the wheel is from viewing a film which is similar to ours, identity thief. In the sequence were the man accidentally gives his bank details to a random women it cuts to two different locations. The one he is at, his work place and the one in which the woman is calling him from, a shopping mall. The place in which our characters are is the following. The male character is seen at his home, in his kitchen. He is at home because we wanted him to been seen as safe in his own home so when he gets hacked it has more of an impact on him. The female is in a dark room, which is unidentifiable. This is because we want her to look like the bad guy and as we don’t show that the hacker is a girl to later on in the film opening the dark unknown room adds to the mysterious vibe which is presented in our film opening.

RESIT-The whole film (Kierann)

The film starts with the main character Hugh at home cracking on with a presentation he is supposed to do to make his co-workers aware of the risk of hackers. As this is happens we see an unknown figure by a computer hacking. We go back to Hugh and we find out that all his money in the bank has been removed and he doesn’t know how. We then see the unknown figure come out of the dark. It turns out to be a woman. She then turns the lights on lies on her bed, going on a shopping spree with the money she has just stolen.

The whole film

Hugh goes to the police and reports what has just happened. They say that they are investigating what has happened but has warned him that it may take while as they have too many cases now. Hugh decides to take the case on his own and goes to his friend who works in the ICT department of his work. His friend, who also is a hacker, finds the hackers IP address and tells Hugh the address. Saying his good byes to his family, Hugh travels half the country to find this hacker. After many hours he finally reaches his destination. When he goes to knock on the door he finds that it is unlocked, and he enters the hackers house. Out of nowhere a frying pan hits him round the head and the screen goes to black. He wakes up tied to a share in the living room. The chair is a fat boy chair and he is tide up with a mixture of skipping rope and duct tape. The hacker says that she is called Zoe. Zoe accuses Hugh of being a loan shark she owes money too. Hugh with no effort at all breaks out of the harnesses and then they have a row. The screen fades out and we discover that they have had a heart to heart and that Hugh still annoyed understands why she did it.

After finally working out why she had committed the attack she had realised that something had happened to the money she stole. This then leads to both the main character and the female hacker to try to work together to find where the money had gone and they took down the loan sharks. Eventually they tracked down the money and had come across an even bigger sum which they both decided to share. Years later they are both best friends, the man still working at his old job and the female hacker now works for the government.

The film ends with her calling him up asking for his assistance as something has happened as she needs his help….

RESIT Final Props (Chris)

The final props that we decided to use were originally the few we wanted to use. We felt that the few props we wanted to use in the beginning of the planning were sufficient in telling our story.

One of the first props we needed was a laptop. Luckily one of the actors had a MAC laptop that we could use to film with. This meant that we could create a virtual desktop in which we could have a popup virus appear. This is obviously how he had lost all of his money. We liked the idea of using a MAC laptop as it has connotations of wealth and that it shows he has a bit of money - which is why he would probably be a target for cyber crime.

The second prop that we wanted to use was was a Windows PC which had two monitors. The reason that we had wanted this is to express the knowledge of the hacker and make her setup look more impressive. We also thought that having more than one monitor meant that we could make her scene look a lot more technical by having multiple different applications open - such as the attack map and a terminal.

Another prop that we decided to use was a mobile phone. We wanted a text to show up - which indicated that something was wrong with his bank account. We didn't just want his bank account to change. We felt that this would have been to hard to film and setup on the computer. The use of the text message instead meant that we would only have to send a text to the characters phone.

We also decided that we wanted to use was a cup. The way this was used was that the character would drink coffee from it. this was to connote that he was hard at work but as well that he was a bit stressed. the other purpose of the mug was to emphasis his reaction when he found that he had no money in his bank account. This was done by him spitting out the coffee he had in his mouth, to show the pure shock.

RESIT-Our chosen Genre (Kierann)

Our chosen Genre

For our genre we have chosen to combine two genres. Comedy and Crime. These will be as strong as each other instead of there being a sub-genre. The reason why we chose to do these genres is because we researched on the BFI and found that both comedy and crime films both commonly have linked together in films as well as being on the top 14 genres by popularity. Successful films such as “Catch me if you can” and “Identity thief” both share these genres. We believe that if we combine these two genres together in one film we will be able to gather a larger audience spread across many demographics it would many combine the ages of 16 to mid/late 30’s of both men and women. We were thinking about adding the romance side to it but we believe this may discourage males from watching the film.

This activity will help me and my group in the progression of our project as we will have a clear idea who we are aiming our project to. This eliminates the  chance of not relating the project to our audience.

RESIT- Location Scouting (Chris)

Location Scouting

When it came to locations we wanted to make sure that we use the best setting we could to tell the story. As our story is about a young business man who gets hacked by a cyber criminal

We first looked at cafes that we could use to film in. We thought that this would be an effective location in which our audience would be able to relate too. We know that a lot of young business men work in their free time at cafes however we wanted our piece to look more homely. We thought that having a more homely look would lead the audience into a false sense of security.

In the end we decided on a house that we were allowed to film in. We wanted to create the idea that he was about to go to work in the morning, and was about to catch up on some work at home before he left. We wanted to show that he was relaxed and thought he was safe. The best way to do this we thought was to have the main character at home in a kitchen. The reason we chose to film in this property is that is was light. The wall colour in the location meant that the footage on the camera looked better and that overall the piece would look better.

The second location we chose to use was another house, which had a dark blue room and a good computer setup in. The idea of a hacker being in a dark room makes the whole idea of it a lot more stereotypical and hopefully makes more sense for the audience. The reason we chose this location is that when its dark outside, the room is a dark blue and the computer screens wouldn't light the room back up, this meant that we could have a sort of dark background in. We felt that this was a lot more stereotypical.

RESIT - shotlist (Chris)

These are some of the shots that we are going to want to use in our final piece to make sure that the film comes out the way in which we want it to.

The first scene that we want in our piece is an opening shot from black to introduce the main character. We feel that this would be a good way to build the suspense of what is going to happen later on in the film.

The second scene that we are going to want to show - and this sort of scene will continue throughout the first part of the opening, is different camera angles of the main character. we want to show off the sort of location on where he is. we feel that this should help set the scene for our piece.

The third sort of scene we want to use is a close up on some computer monitors. We will use this for the hacker to help introduce her. we feel that not showing her till the end will bring upon the surprise that it is a woman hacker and not a man.

The fourth shot we want to use in our film opening is a close up on the mouse and keyboard of the hacker. We want to show the skill that the hacker has and help introduce that she is hard at work. with shots of the mouse, keyboard and her typing means that it will help show the audience what she is doing.

The fifth shot we want to use is a shot of some green text. The stereotype of hacking is that its a screen full of green text. The advantage of the software we used meant that we could create this green text to give the idea that something dodgy is going on.

One of the final shots that we are going to want in our film opening is a shot of the main characters laptop and his bank account. We want to show that he has no money and his reaction - showing that something has happened.

Finally, we want a shot of the hacker girl. We want to introduce her at the very end to help create the surprise that it was a girl that was hacking. We also want to have a comedic evil laugh at the end to give the impression that she is evil.

RESIT-Title (Kierann)

Title

Our genre is Comedy/Crime.
I have been looking on google at films that share the same genre as ours to get a clear, relevant Idea on what my group should call our film. As the crime genre is very closely linked or pared with the action genre, they have a violent side to the title or something else action related, such as Kick Ass and Hot fuzz. What I have discovered is that there are two main types of crime films. You have the physical robbery ones which are closely linked with action. These films include stuff such as bank robberies or gang crime. Now the other is non-violent crimes such as fraud or stealing without harm, such as hacking or identity theft. Less violent crimes. Here I will present some examples to back up my point which will directly show me what area I should be looking for, for my film title.

These films have many things in common with each other. That they are not as gritty as the other type. Sometimes they will include the odd action scene, but do not primarily rely on them as a main part of the story. Another thing they have in common is that the titles sound as if they are all predators. “The Wolf of Wall Street” and “Catch me if you can” they both sound very intimidating as well as “How to Steal a Million”. One major difference I have seen which is different to the other type is that they are all primarily about White collar men and women. The men are wearing a suit while the women are wearing fancy dresses. This automatically gives you an idea that protagonists of these films are getting a lot of money from what they are stealing just by looking at the cover.

These films titles tell the audience instantly that they are jam packed with action and violence. “Kick Ass”, “Hot Fuzz”, “30 minutes or less” “22 Jump Street”. These types of titles are only reserved for films with a lot of action. These titles are supposed to entice the audience to watch them. Such as “30 minutes or less”. That could mean anything but because they know that it is an action it teases the audience what could it be about as it could mean many things. A common theme between both types in many of their titles is that they include numbers. In some cases it’s supposed to show off how dangerous there operation be e.g. “How to steal a million”. In mainstream films through the progression of films people want bigger and better than before. So by them including large numbers in the titles it makes the film sounds like a must see. As a whole instead of names of the films, they are usually short and snappy catch phrases and sentences. This is to make the films sound a lot more interesting at first glance.

In conclusion out of the two types I believe that the first one is best, (Less violent ones). This is, because our film is about identity theft not gang crime. Also our main character is white collar so it makes sense to go with a title from that category. Instead of being a name it should be a catch phrase or sentence. This fits in well with our type as well as a good way to incise the audience to watch our film. It will include a big number. This tells the audience that the protagonist or villain is taking a huge risk, something the audience like to see as it makes the film sound bigger and better at first glance. The title we have come up with “1 million less”. The “1 million less” tells the audience that someone has lost 1 million. Which by its self is a lot of money. But to lose that is demoralising.
